How We Handle Data
This page explains what personal data Degus International comes into contact with, why, and what you can do about it. The short answer is: very little, and none of it is used to profile you or show you advertising.
Who is responsible
The magazine is published by the Degus International editorial team, which acts as the controller for the limited data described below. You can reach us about any privacy question at notes@degus-international.org. We aim to reply within one month, and sooner where we can.
A static site with nothing running in the background
Degus International is built as a static website. Every page is produced in advance and sent to your browser as a finished file. There are no user accounts, no comment boxes, no newsletter sign-up forms and no shop. In practice that means the site does not use:
- analytics or visitor statistics tools;
- advertising networks or ad scripts;
- social media tracking pixels or embedded share widgets that report back to a platform;
- fingerprinting, device IDs or similar methods for spotting the same visitor twice.
Your cookie-banner choice
When you first visit, a small banner asks whether you accept or decline optional cookies. Because we do not run optional cookies, the only thing stored is your answer, so the banner does not reappear on every page. That answer is saved in your browser's local storage on your own device. It is never sent to us, and you can remove it at any time by clearing site data in your browser settings. More detail is on our cookie page.
Hosting logs
Like any website, ours is delivered by a hosting provider. When your browser requests a page, the provider's servers automatically record technical information such as your IP address, the time of the request, the page requested, your browser type and whether the request succeeded. These records exist to deliver the site, keep it secure and diagnose faults. They are kept only for a short period under the provider's own retention settings, we do not combine them with other data, and we do not use them to identify individual readers. We rely on our legitimate interest in keeping the magazine online, reachable and protected against abuse as the legal basis.
When you email us
If you write to us, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever you choose to put in the message. We use this only to read and answer your message and, where relevant, to fix an article. Correspondence is kept for as long as it is useful for that purpose and then deleted. We never add you to a mailing list or pass your details to anyone else. Please do not send account numbers, passwords or identity documents; we will never ask for them.
Links to other websites
Articles occasionally point to pages run by other organisations. After you click through, their privacy rules govern what happens next, and those rules are outside our hands.
Your rights
If the General Data Protection Regulation or a similar law applies to you, you have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to its use, and to receive a copy in a portable format. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the data protection authority in the country where you live or work. To exercise any of these rights, email the address above and tell us what you need.
Changes to this page
If the way the site handles data changes, for example because a new feature is added, this page will be updated before the change takes effect. Questions about anything here can go through our contact page.
