Small Print on Cookies

Cookie notices are usually long because websites use a lot of cookies. This one stays brief because there is so little to declare. This page sets out exactly what is and is not stored when you read Degus International.

What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to keep. Related technologies, such as local storage, do a similar job by saving a small piece of information on your device. Websites use them to remember logins, store shopping baskets, measure visits or follow people around the web for advertising.

What we store

One thing: your answer to the cookie banner. When you click accept or decline, that choice is written to your browser's local storage so the banner does not ask again on every page. It contains no name, no email address and no identifier that could be linked to you. It stays on your device and is not sent to us or to anyone else.

What we do not store

  • No analytics cookies counting visits or tracking which pages you read.
  • No advertising cookies or retargeting tags.
  • No social media cookies, because the site has no embedded social widgets.
  • No login or session cookies, because there are no reader accounts.

Accepting or declining therefore makes no practical difference to what is collected; the banner exists so that you are informed and so that your choice is respected if the site ever changes.

Changing your mind

To reset your choice, clear the stored data for this site in your browser settings. You will usually find the option among the privacy controls of your browser. On your next visit the banner returns and asks you once more. You can also block all cookies and local storage in your browser; the magazine will still work, though the banner may reappear on each visit.

Links to other sites

If you follow a link from one of our articles to another website, that website may set its own cookies. Its own cookie policy applies there, not this one.

Hosting

Our hosting provider keeps short-lived technical logs to deliver pages and protect the site. These are server records rather than cookies, and they are described in How We Handle Data.
